Sometimes in life we’re handed a compass when we least expect it.
That’s what happened to Gay Hendricks. The unsuspecting counselor went to a party and had a surprising conversation about deathbed wishes, an exchange that set him on a different course entirely, completely changing his life.
At the gathering Hendricks met a man named Ed and a surprising conversation unfolded. Ed said “One upon a time I almost died,” and he explained that when he was on his deathbed, he made a pact with God. If he survived he promised to achieve all his goals and dreams.
Hendricks listened and then imagined himself on his deathbed, ultimately deciding to wake up and change his life.
Hendricks is not unlike Charlyn Belluzzo, the author of “Authentic Sensual Living” and the brainchild behind www.amorosabella.com. Belluzzo was handed her compass when a Muni Train barreled down the track just inches from her face. Distracted she had inadvertently stepped dangerously close to the track when the conductor blew the horn and frantically yelled “Get off the track,”
It was as though both Belluzzo and Hendricks were roused from a deep sleep, setting in motion a monumental transformation. The tectonic plates of their lives shifted irrevocably and from that day forward “conscious living” was set in motion. Neither could go backwards if they tried, not after tasting how delicious it is to live in the moment.
You’re being handed your compass today, an opportunity to wake up. You don’t have to be on your deathbed fighting cancer or unwittingly find yourself in the path of a blaring train. There are countless ways to wake up so why wait for a catastrophe? Your imagination is all you need.
So take a moment. Quiet yourself. And then imagine you’re on your deathbed today or 50 years from now. Now just answer this question: Has your life been a complete success?
If your answer is no, get busy.
